International Nurse’s Day, 12th May, is the day when the life of Florence Nightingale, considered by some to be the founder of modern-day nursing, is recognised and celebrated. It is also the day when the world unites in their support and respect of nurses, while acknowledging and celebrating the unique contribution that nurses make, not only in supporting the health of all nations, but in helping to maintain and improve global economic growth. After all, when populations are healthy, they are better able to contribute to society, undertake active work, and care for their families.

There have been many renowned leaders throughout history. Alexander the Great. Cleopatra. Winston Churchill. Liz Truss… OK, maybe the last one is a bit of a stretch, but many civilizations have been defined by a single inspirational leader who was able to bend circumstances to their will.

To a much lesser extent, the same is true in any workplace. Someone has to make  decisions and drive strategies or ideas, otherwise nothing would get done. But what is it that makes a great leader? What qualities make people follow one person and not another? 

Jackie Morton describes a research study which utilised a model of reflective practice and identified factors seen as important in the leadership of community based nurses and health visitors.
