Normal wound healing follows a complex series of biological and chemical events that can be divided into four distinct overlapping phases (Hart, 2002). Progress is usually well organised, occurring in a timely manner (Enoch and Leaper, 2005). However, wounds that fail to follow this orderly progress may become 'static' or 'delayed' in healing, and be classified as chronic (White, 2008). This unit reviews the definitions, signs and symptoms, and common investigations for wound infection.
